01 · The raise
$1.5M pre-seed: investors will ask what happened to the others
HereAfter AI was reported shut down in 2026. StoryFile went through Chapter 11 and emerged in March 2025 under new owners. Meela, which Forbes reported raised a $3.5M seed, now leads its site with a rides service. In this category the demo is not the question; retention and unit costs are. Every photo that moves is paid AI video, which is why the deck caps animations per plan and says plainly that Memri is pre-launch. The 50-family beta starting today is where the numbers come from, above all whether a parent tells the story of three photos within 48 hours of the invite.
02 · The market
The need hasn’t moved. The threat is the archive.
More than 16 million Americans 65+ live alone, and 33% of adults 50–80 felt lonely in 2024, back at the 2018 level. Pew’s August 2026 count: 54% of Americans in their 40s have a parent 65+ and a child to support. That is the buyer. MyHeritage animated more than 10 million faces in about two weeks in 2021 and left out speech on purpose. The real competitor is Ancestry, with more than 3 million paying subscribers and the photos already; if it adds conversation, trust is what Memri competes on.
03 · Grants & programmes
Two that take no equity
AARP’s AgeTech Collaborative runs an 8-week virtual accelerator with no fees and no equity, four cohorts a year. The way in is a 3–5 minute pitch at one of its events, then an interview. The National Institute on Aging’s 2027 Start-Up Challenge opens December 1 and closes January 15, with a webinar on December 3: $24,000 each for up to 21 finalists, and $70,000 more for each of 7 winners. NIA’s SBIR/STTR programme is funding again through 2031, but its last listed receipt date (September 5) has passed.

To do this week
| 1 | Send the first beta invites, then watch where they stall in the first 48 hours. 90-day plan |
| 2 | Book counsel for the trust review: AI disclosure, voice consent, export and delete, before anyone outside the beta sees it. California’s SB 243 already requires companion chatbots to say they are AI. Future of Privacy Forum |
| 3 | Apply for an AgeTech Collaborative pitch slot. Apply to pitch |
| 4 | Put December 3 in the calendar for the NIA Start-Up Challenge webinar; submissions open December 1. |
| 5 | Put the export button in before the ads. When HereAfter AI reportedly closed, families could only get their recordings back by email. |
